So you threw an amazing party. Congratulations, your work is done! Oh wait, who’s that still sitting in your living room?
Whether for an hour or a weekend, entertaining guests can be a daunting task.
I, for one, have experienced both ends of the spectrum: the stress of accommodating others and the horror of sleeping on my cousin’s hardwood floor.
I know full well that it is hard to bring that homey feel into an unfamiliar place but Amy Neben’s book, A Gracious Welcome, attempts to make things easier.
From how to make homemade creations to advice on how to utilize your time best together, Neben covers all aspects of how to be the upmost host or hostess.
When entertaining, even the smallest touches can make all the difference. Thus, hosting long term should be given the same amount of dedication as a well planned celebration.
Next time I have company, I will be ready to impress. Who knows, maybe I’ll send this book to my cousin and finally graduate to sleeping on his lumpy couch.
How do you make your guests feel at home? Which do you enjoy? Being the host/hostess or the guest?

I most enjoy being the hostess to an event. It’s challenging to know what you can do to make guests feel welcome and comfortable. However, I enjoy the opportunity to let guests know I enjoy their company and that I’ve tried to think of ways that show I’ve personally thought of them by implementing something specific about each guest. Such as, favorite foods or drinks to have on hand or if its an overnight guest I try to give them the hotel experience with a well made room and bed with luxury bedding and linens. I also try to include a basket of items just for them such as toiletries, snacks and magazines or information about the city I live in or near in case they want to explore or venture out.

I like to create a calm and relaxed setting for my guests. The pantry and fridge must be well stocked and I let my guests know they are welcome to help themselves to whatever they want. Their bedroom will have fresh crisp linens on the bed. I have the window dressed so they they can have it nice and dark, or bright and sunny. There is a small lamp in case they need a night light. I make sure the bathroom is well outfitted in case they happened to forget something. Guest towels are a must. I always prepare a huge homecooked meal.

I like to surprise my guests by having their favorite foods and drinks available. There is nothing like having their favorite bottle of wine handy or a special treat around to make them feel at home.
