Yesterday’s book recommendation
was all about being a reluctant entertainer, and let’s face it: entertaining others is stressful.
For today’s open thread, let’s talk about what stresses you out about entertaining and how you fix it.
Tell us: How do you deal with the stress of hosting?
What are your biggest fears when throwing an event?

I adore hosting parties, dinners, and other events — to keep my stress levels in line I maintain an entertaining journal and always have plenty of food & drink on hand. The worst entertaining disaster I have had to deal with was a uninvited guest of a guest who was also unknowing the ex partner to another guest….the white elephant in the room was tiny but kept me on my hostess toes all night.

I think the most stressful thing is trying to assure your guests that they are getting what they pay for (in terms of events and parties where the guests have to pay). It’s a shame, and it gets pretty irritating when people start wondering if you’re charging too much or trying to scalp them and whatnot.. I try my best to be dismissive of rumors like that, but sometimes it’s a bit disheartening when the people are supposed to be your own friends… but it’s good to always maintain your cool, calm and collected image despite of what others say. Lose your cool, and you might as well have shot yourself in the foot.

Never thought it would happen but I adore hosting. I want everything ready before the guests arrive and so I can enjoy time with them. This does not always happen, hello anxiety, but I am developing and learning to rest in the fact that God works everything out in the end.

The thing that stresses me out is when I can’t do things ahead of time. I like to get as much done as possible in advance and all of those last minute things that can’t be done until the day of the event stress me out.

I’m a planner by nature. I love setting things up and seeing the end product really come to exuberant life. The stressful part for me is during the event; facial expressions go a long why and I like to see that people are enjoying what I/we’ve created. If the energy falls and it becomes a sit down restaurant with no fun factor, I stress about what I could’ve don better. After all, you can’t win everything; a valuable life lesson indeed.
